What hand tools would you buy if you could have anything you wanted today?

Power tools are great; nobody could deny that they speed things up right?

Have you noticed that sometimes, a particular hand tool could help you out in the moment?

It could save you from setting up another power tool.

Take a belt sander. Pick it up, plug in your power cord, attach your dust collection and you're ready to start sanding.

Compare that to a #4 smoothing plane.

Step 1 - Pick it up
Step 2 - Use it.
Step 3 - Put it away.

Plus it can give you the kind of glass smooth surface you could only dream of with sandpaper...

I think, the point is, there's no setup, no noise, no electricity bill, no dust collection.

We've taken a moment to give you a list of great hand tools that fill that gap for you.

Standard Bench Planes

A #5 Jack plane to remove peaks in the wood surface ready for flattening.
A #6 Fore plane to true the surface.
A #7 Jointer plane for a perfectly flat surface ready for smoothing.
A #4 Smoothing plane for a glass smooth surface without sanding.

Block planes

Great for delicate precision work on smaller surfaces.

A
low angle block plane for end grain and surface application.
A standard bevel up block plane for difficult grain and general purpose work.
Router plane - small router planes make dadoes and grooves look easy. They give you a micro adjustable depth of cut for precision joinery.
Chisels - Bench chisels are the definition of a woodworking tool.

The most valuable and versatile tool in your shop.

Ideal for every day stock removal and joinery.
A set of mortise chisels for straight edged mortise cuts.
Spokeshaves - Flat, Round and concave spokeshaves.

Precision shaping of curved wooden surfaces.
Shoulder plane - For perpendicular tenon shoulders, cheeks, grooves or rabbets.
Chisel plane - Absolutely unbeatable for removing glue squeeze out or flushing and cleaning up raised dowels and dovetails.

Why?

You can see where you're cutting and you can cut right up to a raised edge.
Cross cut hand saw - When it'll take longer to set up your cross cut sled or the workpiece is too big to set up for a cut.

Mark a line and this tool will get the job done.

Finish off with a shooting plane and you'll have a perfect 90° jointed end grain cut in no time.
Tenon saw (rip cutting) - Perfect for a quick tenon cheek, this versalite saw will give you fast, deep and precise cuts.
Tenon saw (Cross cutting) - Reach for this saw when cutting tenon shoulders.

Cross cutting teeth will slice through wood fibers for a tear out free cut.
Dovetail saw - For precise ripping cuts in end grain.

This saw will cut right on your line for accurate, effortless dovetails.
