A custom furniture inquiry normally comes as a description and a question.
"We’d like a new entertainment center made from reclaimed barn timbers. We’d like 7 shelves and space for my new wine fridge please?”
"How much would something like that cost?"
Clearly answering that question is impossible (there’s no price list for something we have never made before).
Custom furniture is a PROTOTYPE that will be planned and developed thoroughly for one client then hand made and it must be flawless...
There's no blueprint, no plan, no list of materials, we don't know how much time it’ll take to build. We literally start with nothing...
So how do we come up with an estimate?
Well, over the course of 3 to 5 days (typically)
We design it - (even if you provide photographs or sketches because we need dimensions for every inch of every part)
We figure out - How to build it and what materials we think we'll need
We try to estimate how much time it'll take to build
Then once we have all that in a spreadsheet
We present our findings to you as a formal ESTIMATE.
We used to do all that work for free but a week of R & D with nothing to show for it is no joke.
“So if I’m interested... What’s the process?”
1. We take a non refundable development deposit up front for Design, Development & Planning.
$600 for simple or smaller items like nightstands, side tables etc.
$1000 for more complex or larger items like beds, tables, entertainment centers, etc.
2. Once we have enough information and we’ve done the hard part, we present that estimate to you.
3. Should you decide to go ahead, we'd ask for a signed copy to verify that you've read and fully understand our terms of service. You'd pay a 50% deposit to secure your order and we go from there.
“Anything else I might need to know?”
A wait list is normal for a healthy wood shop. It’s made up of the project we’re currently working on followed by any clients who were in line before you.
Ask for details and availability when you inquire.
"given that it's an estimate (rather than a bid/quotation or contract), what if it costs more than estimated? Or I make changes?”
If it exceeds the estimated cost... (that’s why it’s an estimate) Obviously, we can, 'and will' charge more if there are unforeseen expenses, alterations or additions.
If you add things, make changes or in any way cause the project to cost more than originally planned, any costs incurred will be added to your final invoice.
If however, overages are just unavoidable, unforeseen expenses, we will charge for them but we'd never charge more than 20% over the initial estimate even if it costs significantly more money to complete the project.
Either way, If we cap out on budget, we’d tell you and you’d let us know if you’d like us to continue or change something, (Just like they do in those home makeover shows).
If you can't rest without some sort of price expectation hopefully this helps:
We have a minimum order value of $1500 for custom projects. Below that we'd probably be paying to build something for you rather than the other way round.
To Design, Develop, Plan, Build and Ship custom made furniture:
A bed might start as low as $2500 or easily exceed $10,000 for something seriously special.
An entertainment center can start as low as $3000 and easily go well over $20,000 for something that’ll take 3 months to build.
A dining table can start as low as $2000 but a large live edge slab on a custom metal base with all the bells and whistles could be more than $20,000. A bookcase can start around $1500 but something spectacular can get to well over $10,000.
We could go all day but you get the picture...
The point is, custom made furniture is not an everyday convenience purchase, it's special, man made and you really do get what you pay for...
