Making a wood glue bath for fast and clean glue application...

I've been making wooden accessories for years, they can be time consuming but a lot of fun...

Anyway, I've been thinking of ways to speed up the process without spending a lot of money.

Small internal components go together with Titebond 3 wood glue.

I've tried epoxy (too expensive) and CA glue (too brittle).

I normally use a jig to hold everything together until the glue dries but it's still a slow and messy job.

Lots of small parts to glue and position in a hurry.

Recently I came up with this.

It's a glue bath.

I came up with the idea when I saw how large manufacturers glue panels together.

After a quick online search, I bought 4 springs, some 1/8" wire and a fly screen.

I'll use 3/4" melamine for the base and 3/4" MDF for the dip tray

In use, I'll pour about 1/4" of wood glue into the bath and dip the mesh into it.

It should spring back with a thin, even coat of glue on the mesh.

I'll touch the mesh with each component to apply the correct amount of glue in the blink of an eye.
  • No shaky hands trying to apply glue to the thin edge of a component.
  • No spreading glue with my finger.
  • No paper towel clean up.
  • No wet brush and cup of water standing by.

Just dip and fit, or at least that's the theory...

I can pour the glue back into the bottle when I'm done or mist the surface with water and fit a lid so it's ready for next time...

I haven't actually made it yet but I'll and I'll let you know how it goes.

In the meantime, here are the components you'll need if you feel like trying this one for yourself.
Forney 72510 Wire Spring Extension (10-23), 9/32-Inch-by-1-1/2-Inch-by-.025-Inch, 2-Pack
