Wood shop basics where to start

THE ELEPHANT IN THE ROOM - STORAGE!

If you want a wood shop, start with a blank canvass.

Let's be honest, the average garage these days has become less of a home for the car and more of a dumping ground for, well... STUFF.

The fact is, if you want your woodshop, it's all got to go.

You'll have to get used to calling it a shop or a wood shop, otherwise you'll find that your significant other keeps leaving boxes next to the door for you to find a home for in there.

Ah, who are we kidding, that'll happen either way.

The point is... You're going to need to rehouse that stuff so you're either going to need to build your own shed or buy one.

Building your own is a great project if you have the time. It might even be cheaper.

If you decide to go that route, and don't have time to design your own shed, there are plenty of online shed plans you could turn to here are a couple of examples...

We also recommend that you take a trip to your local hardware store. They typically have sheds for sale but you don't always have much to choose from.

Something like this should usually give you everything you need...

If you do decide to design and build your own shed from scratch, let us know. We'd love to hear from you.

Check back tomorrow and we'll look at the importance of starting with a good foundation (in more ways than one).

It’s tough for me to create and build something. I’m not good with my hands and I’m not that creative. I don’t even know how to handle stones and woods. But I wanted to renovate our storage room. I am thinking of leaving the work to the experts but my husband said we should try and build something using our own strength. Thanks for giving us an idea how hard it is to build this. I am now doubting myself. But with this, we know where to start.

I hear you. Honestly, if you know your limitations and you think that it's better to leave it to the experts, there's nothing wrong with that. If you do want to start to do more of your own DIY/Home Improvements, there are endless resources available to you now. You'd be amazed how quickly you can become pretty competent just by watching youtube and buying a few tools (always follow and respect the safety instructions that come with your tools. Tools designed to cut wood can be extremely dangerous if you're not following the rules)... The 'Home based wood shop' is a place you can turn to for woodworking advice whenever you need it so don't be shy to get in touch.
