For a long time, one of my favourite Magazines has been Fine Woodworking.
From apprentices to experienced woodworkers you just cant go far wrong.  I've been working with wood for as far back as I can remember and I still learn something every time.

As I see it, the quality of your work and the time it takes to finish are both hinged on how sharp your tools are (among other things).  So for today's post, Id like to share with you FWW's superb article on sharpening.  Enjoy!

In once had an older craftsman tell me that the quality of your life as a woodworker would be related to the quality of the edge you maintain on your tools. At the time, I was just starting out, and both my skills and tools were, shall we say - not too sharp.

I gathered stones and oil and water and diamond plates and sandpaper on discs and all sorts of things, and could get passably sharp - enough to shave my forearm, the test I has adopted.

But about 10 years ago a carver friend showed me his system. The basic system is two cardboard discs on a grinder. Each is treated with a grit, and one is the less fine and the other is fine. Once the tool's edge is properly ground, a few seconds on each wheel face and back, face and back will give a mirror polish to the edge and it is very sharp!

The website is: http://www.sharpeningwheels.com/new/

I can't complain about the quality of my life, but my edge tools have never been sharper.
