Lets face it, when you just start out as a woodworking hobbyist, sanding isn't that big of a deal.

The more you have to do though, the bigger that deal gets.

Over the years I've tried out a lot of sandpaper manufacturers and the picture starts to become pretty clear after a while.

There's mainstream sandpaper you'll find in every hardware store across the country.

Then there's the less that mainstream stuff that behind the scene's, professionals have been using for years and manufacturers have been perfecting for years too.

When I started out I'd do what most of us do. I'd go to the hardware store, buy a multi pack of generic sandpaper and that served me fine back then.

Then I realized how much I was paying and that there's a lot more to sanding than grit.

So I did my research.

I found out about stearated sandpaper first of all.

Stearation is when the sanding grit snaps and gradually breaks up as you use it. That action creates new sharp edges continually and effectively gives you much longer lasting paper.

As my business grew and I took on larger projects I found that I was spending a small fortune on sandpaper and discs so I started to save my money and buy in bulk.

Where before I was paying as much as a dollar per sheet, these days I use significantly better paper and pay around $0.10 per sheet. I'm also devoting almost zero time driving to the hardware store to buy sandpaper so it's a win/win.

If I absolutely need the finest possible, glass smooth surface, we all know that garnet sandpaper is the better choice. It doesn't last as long and it'll take you more time, but it will give you a better final finish.

Both types are available online from Klingspor.

I buy every grit from 60 grit down to 400 grit. They offer a range of options (paper size, backing pad type, backing, grit, abrasive grains & compatibility).

There's flat rate shipping and you never get a sheet that isn't perfectly packed and protected.

Do I still go to the hardware store for sandpaper? Only when I run out.

What about sandpaper for my other tools?

They make everything you could ask for. Where sanding is concerned, this place is a candy store.
